Lessons' on friendship from the Cheetah Girls

Disney’s The Cheetah Girls—inspired by Deborah Gregory’s books—followed Galleria, Chanel, Aqua, and Dorinda, a high school girl group chasing musical stardom. Through their trilogy of adventures, the girls faced countless ups and downs, showcasing the complexities of friendship. While fictional, their story offers real-life lessons about how we navigate relationships.

The Cheetah Girls were an unfit friend group at their core. Each member had different perspectives, goals, and levels of commitment, which often led to tension. Galleria, the group’s driven leader, constantly pushed for opportunities to elevate their music careers. However, her ambition was met with jealousy and resistance from the others, who accused her of being “too bossy.” Instead of appreciating her vision, they often undermined her, creating a rift in their bond.

Their conflicting motives were especially evident during their trip to Barcelona in the second movie. While Galleria focused on their music festival performance, the others got distracted by romance, fashion, and side quests. When Galleria tried to refocus the group, she was painted as the villain. This imbalance highlighted a recurring issue: the girls weren’t equally invested in their shared goals, leading to frustration and disconnection.

The lesson here? Not everyone is meant to be your friend. As women, we often feel pressured to maintain every relationship, but The Cheetah Girls remind us that friendships require shared values and mutual respect. Galleria needed friends who matched her ambition and drive, while the others needed space to pursue their own interests. This mismatch ultimately led to their struggles.

Even Raven-Symoné, who played Galleria, mirrored this lesson in real life. She left the franchise’s third installment, citing her identity as a solo artist—a decision that echoed her character’s need to prioritize her own path.

Dorinda and Aqua’s clashes with Galleria also underscored the importance of boundaries and equal effort in friendships. Their socio-economic differences and varying levels of commitment further emphasized that true friendship requires being “equally yoked.”

The Cheetah Girls may have been a story about chasing dreams, but at its heart, it was a lesson in friendship: sometimes, even the closest bonds aren’t meant to last—and that’s okay.
